Elaine Griffin – mother, wife, artist and all-around crazy girl living and working outside of Ithaca, NY. I love my family, organizing, deviance, and dissent. That’s just the tip of the iceberg about me. If you want to know more about my personal life, there is a blog about that. It covers the basics like epic fails as a mother (who trusted me with these cute little freaks!!??), why I’m always organizing, what I’m cooking, and how I’m dreaming of being in Roller Derby. Groovy, right?
My background is not in graphic art and web design, but rather, sociology, and in particular, race, class and gender inequality. Yes, that is a mouth and a brain full. What does one do with that, you ask? Well, a lot, really. The world of a sociologist is one big, fat, dizzying oyster. And before I had time to swallow my oyster, BAM! I had a baby boy. So, I’m a self-taught girl who learned to love web art after working with a designer on a website for a children’s clothing business I owned. Let me tell you, it is hard to make a living handmaking and selling children’s clothes. Plus, doing it for a living was taking all the fun out of it. So, many books, tutorials and hundreds of practicing hours later, here I am, doing something that I absolutely love. The beauty of all of this is I have found a way to bring my social justice training together with my love of good web art. I’m able to stay home with my kids AND bring quality art to people.
I get what it’s like to start or expand a business. I know what it is like to start from scratch – to put it all on the line, and be scared so bad that you feel emotionally, physically and mentally paralyzed. Many times, no matter how much you want and need to do this it’s very scary and very draining! But I also know how gratifying and freeing it all is. ~Que dreamy music ~ to hold your business card in your hands for the first time. To see your name or business name on a screen for the WORLD to see! So not only do I offer graphic and web design, but I also offer a helping hand – someone who will help to make it great, and less scary. Someone that will stand in your corner and cheer. Because whether you are taking a big leap or a small step, you *will* be okay.
And you have me. And you have this blog. And I have been living and breathing social media and branding. Thanks for letting me share what I know with you!
